FOR THE SCOUT ORIENTEERING CHALLENGE
1.Bastrop State Park – obviously the closest to the event. Book early –
six months out is the earliest. Call TPWD at 512-389-8900. BSP also has
room to accommodate up to 200 people in a primitive camping setting on a
first come first served setting - no reservations. You have to walk
about a mile to the campsites from parking (good training).
2. Buescher St. Pk. – OK, the second closest place. Call TPWD at
512-389-8900. This park is adjacent to Bastrop State Park to the east.
3. Lost Pines Scout Reservation – the best deal in town – free to Boy
Scout and Venture units. Webelos units can camp in the Tom Wooten area.
Call 512-926-6363 at the council office to make your reservations. Only
a couple miles from “O” Meet.
4. Lake Bastrop South Shore - this is an LCRA park but also reserved
through TPWD at 512- 389-8900. (About a couple miles from the St. Pk.)
Great Place to camp on the water. Great park.
5. Lake Bastrop North Shore - (next to Lost Pines Scout Reservation)
reserved through TPWD at 389-8900. LCRA park, again, a super place to
camp and on the lake.
6. River Bend Park, Smithville. About a 20 minute drive from Bastrop St.
Pk. It is located on Hwy.. 71 along the Colorado River; has a format
similar to a state park, about $9 a night per site. Call 512 -237-5235.
7. There is a private camping area at Rocky Hill Ranch. This is a
mountain biking ranch but with camping available 2 1/2 miles east of
Buescher St. Pk. on FM 153 in Smithville. My information here is from
the State Park staff. The ranch's # is 512 - 237-3112.
8. People have stayed at McKinney Falls St Pk. off Hwy. 183 in Austin.
Call TPWD 512 - 389-8900 for reservations. This is about a 30 minute
drive to Bastrop State Park and has a really nice nature center to visit
and other programs available if you want to make a weekend of it.
9. McKinney Roughs Nature Park, an LCRA facility, is located on Hwy 71
between Bastrop and Austin, does not allow camping but is a great park
to come visit. There is an exhibit hall of fish from the Colorado River
and snakes and other reptiles. The park also has 18 miles of trails.
Great park for a Philmont Training hike. Free for youth under 13; $4 for
13 and over.
